Skulls! - Mass Painting Bases

My khorne skull bases came in from Micro Art studios.  I have enough for my vision of the army so I painted them all up at once.  Some air brushing of bone, gryphon wash followed by wych drybrush and skull white and we're done.

[Emerald Fists] Assault Marines Complete

Assault marines finished!  This is my second Emerald Fists assault squad which puts me up to 80% finished my 3rd company.  Everything is on magnets so I can swap weapons and add jump packs.  These guys will likely be run as 5 man squads in drop pods so I needed 4 flamers.

[Emerald Fists] Assault Marines WIP 4

Finished aside from the eyes.  Also need to drill out and pin the bases.  Having a box of pre-done bases is handy but my supply is running low.  I'll have to paint up another batch.

[Emerald Fists] Assault Marines WIP 2

All the silver is done (at least based and washed).  I have to touch up with mithril edging though.

[Emerald Fists] Assault Marines WIP

Time to work on my assault marines.  I did these guys up with 4 flamers so that I could run them in two groups of 5.  Just working through the drybrushing white and some of the metal.  The flamers and the packs are on magnets so I can paint jumppacks some day if the urge ever arises.

Khorne Maulerfiend - progress 3

Well I'm done painting this (minus the blood effect) and I really enjoyed it.  I've come up with an easier to paint scheme so it's much faster than my Emerald Fists and it was a nice change all in.  The oxide paint is pretty cool stuff.  I think one must be quite careful not to over do it though since it is quite bright and in this instance doesn't match my colour scheme.  I still need bases (and I've ordered them from Micro Art Studios).  I'm getting those full on skull bases to do the entire army.  Skulls for the skull throne and such!  Not sure when those will arrive but I'll be doing the bases all at once for the entire army in bulk.

[Fluff] The Siege of Bruj - Chapter 4

Based on an adaptation of the Badab War Campaign, the result of 5 games of Warhammer 40k are being used to write a recount of 'The Siege of Bruj', a compendium for the background of the traitorous elements of the Emerald Fists; my homebrew chapter.  The results are being formatted with photographs of my models and the battles.  Enjoy.

Click here for previous and future chapters, current links to the draft formatted (with pictures) version and more background.

Khorne Maulerfiend - progress 2

Black done, flesh done, metal done the only thing that's left is the bronze.  I've never used Nihilakh oxide before and this being a new army is a perfect chance to try out a new paint type. I'm a bit worried but will let these washes dry first.  My plan for the army is to use red (obviously) for the flesh of the daemons and black as the major secondary colour for the armour on vehicles, bikes, bloodcrushers and such.  I bought this model preassembled and the neck was placed in what I can only say is wrong, but despite trying my hardest I couldn't break the bond without breaking the model.  In my opinion the neck spines should be rotated to the model's left in line with its head.  Hopefully I'm the only one who will notice.  I think I'll also try out the new blood technical paint on this army too.

State of the Game and how to reintroduce players

If you've followed my blog for the last while you've noticed I focus on the modelling and not the game.  I will say that I used to play a lot, like once a week, with my group of friends.  We're all around 30 years old without kids so money isn't the deciding factor in our gaming.  We've all stopped playing mid way though six edition (gamers since 3rd).  For many reasons we felt the game became more 'competitive' and less narrative in that victories were far more one sided, list building became way more important and disparity between lists (especially with allies) became rediculous.  While one could say that it is our responsibility to limit the power level of the armies we play, in practice this isn't plausible.  I've had many games with strangers that were 'competitive' or 'friendly' and experienced things vastly different than what my interpretation of those two words was.

I'm curious if anyone else has experienced this and how they've fixed it (obviously if you don't think it needs fixing you can't help my group's dilemma).  One such option I've heard was to play Highlander (all codex entries are 0-1 essentially) which prevents spamming.  I haven't tried it yet but think it's a cool idea though it prevents things like a fluffy Raven Guard army from being built.  I don't like the idea of pre-approving your opponents list, but I am turned off by the idea (and experience) of being tabled turn 2 in a friendly game.

Not a whine, I'm looking for legitimate thoughts on how to get my friends back into a universe I've invested countless hours into.

Khorne Maulerfiend - progress 1

Here's my first khorne model.  The maulerfiend all basecoated.  I chaos blacked the model then did a vallejo model air dark grey blue from above.  It's subtle but you can see the colour change vs the plastic base.  I've also added a collar of khorne to this big brute and a khorne symbol to the inside of the chaos star on his back.  The squid arms (I'm new so don't know what they're called haha) were magnetised so they can be stored or swapped.
