Step 1 is to line up all of the books and draw a line at 1" increments down the future spine. This makes sure all of the holes will be lined up. After that, I took the staples out and then, with each individual book lying flat, used an awl to stab a hole at each pen mark. Once that was done, I followed the youtube video linked in my first post for the instructions on sewing the spines.
This was fairly time consuming and I broke a needle and also had to restart once. Oops! Luckily there's really no harm done if you do it wrong or your thread is too loose. You can start over.
After a few hours work I had all of the books sewn together. The scary glue part comes next...
